(April 7) - When Shaun Ellis came upon three abandoned wolf pups, he decided to raise them to be wild in a most unconventional way -- by pretending to be a wolf himself.

Ellis has spent his entire life studying the behavior of wolves and their interaction with humans. The National Geographic Channel followed Ellis' fascinating pursuit, producing a documentary called "A Man Among Wolves" that airs April 16.

First becoming interested in wolves as a child, Ellis says he decided to live among a wolf pack to help bridge the gap between wolves and humans. Ellis readily admits that many people will find it crazy that he lives and behaves like a wolf, but he thinks the ultimate benefits of his experiment make his case.

In the documentary, Ellis describes how he eats and lives with the wolves. His food is placed in a plastic bag inside an animal carcass that the rest of the wolves eat from.

In some ways, Ellis almost stopped being human. He talked about putting his emotions on hold while he was with the animals, because wolves do not feel emotions. When he leaves the pack, he finds it difficult to interact with other human beings. He is a "true wolf man. You can't get closer to wolves than he has," the documentary's producer, Bernard Walton, said of Ellis.

Ellis warns those watching though that "it's very dangerous for people who haven't been trained, who think that they can just walk into a wolf pack and be accepted."

The documentary includes the opinions of experts -- such as Chris Darimont, a wolf biologist with the Raincoast Conservation Society's wolf project and an instructor at the University of Victoria in British Columbia -- who are both intrigued by and skeptical of Ellis' unorthodox methods.

"I find it difficult to resolve that as humans we can teach wolves something," Darimont says. "I think the best teachers for wolves are their parents and older siblings in their natural social environment."

He concedes, however, that "lots of progress that has been made in science over the last century and more comes from the mavericks, or people that think a little differently."

Biologist Doug Smith, leader of the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Project, said, "When you eat and sleep and interact with wolves -- that's something we can't replicate here, we won't do, we can't do."

Walton described the difficulties in filming, such as the camera crew having to wear protective gear and the use of a small camouflage tent to hide the camera. The wolves, he says, became jittery around strangers, so Ellis was in a unique position of being comfortable with the wolves.

According to Walton, Ellis truly sees "the world through the eyes of a wolf," offering a point of view that scientists so far have not been able to access.

Some time ago, in years, I read Women who run with the Wolves. It suddenly occurred to me at that experience of reading the book; how wolf-like I had become by living so many years as a recluse. Of course I worked in a large company; but I never had friends. I chose to be alone; in my den. I created a home of peace, contentment, and safety from all who were around me. Even disconnected the phone at times, for protection; and not facing people I did not feel were right for me; and shut the door on many "would be friends" I feel Wolves are the epitome of our zest, and ferocious drive to be women. We are wolfs, all of us, but some do not see this power and strength we have. Our spirits are alive with homes, pups, the dominant male, and our vast array of wolf behaviors that we convert to human characteristics. A new Bush Administration proposal to strip gray wolves of federal protection would pave the way for mass killings of wolves in Yellowstone's wild country and central Idaho. This reckless plan would turn over wolf management to state agencies. Idaho is already gearing up to kill off the majority of its wolves. With oil and gas drilling, logging and road building chipping away at crucial wildlife habitat across the Rockies, leaving wolves unprotected could drive them back to the brink of extinction.

Sometime this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to release a proposal to strip wolves of crucial Endangered Species Act protections across most of Wyoming and de-list wolves in Idaho, where the state is poised to kill up to 75% of the wolves living in the Lolo district of the Clearwater National Forest.

This proposal could allow the use of aerial gunning and other lethal control methods to kill as many as two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming and as many as 54 of Idaho's 65 wolf packs!

Gone Feral?!?

Gone Feral?!? and other dream terms I had never heard before . . .

Ok, I have very detailed specific dreams I call my "Direction Dreams', because they always involve specific detailed directions. Often, I am given a word that I have never heard before, and (in my dream) I am unconscious of the meaning, but when I look up the word later, it seems to be very relevant to the dream. Does anyone else experience this kind of thing on a regular basis?!?

For example, this morning I had a dream where the term "gone Feral" was used; Defined; Existing in a wild or untamed state, either naturally or having returned to such a state from domestication (the cat has "gone feral"; wild). This is generally a term used for animals gone wild (can also mean, causing death; fatal), but in my dream it referred to a loaf of bread.

Here is the scenario; I have been working my way through a series of obstacles when the scene changes. I am not sure if am just observing or am some kind of witch/prophetess/matriarch, but I can certainly sense the feelings of this person. She is annoyed at the announcement of the future marriage of man to whom she is associated (but not in love with; a son?), and has created three impossible tasks that the young women must accomplish before they can marry.

The girl passes the 1st task, but the witch is quite confident that she will be unable to produce "Two loaves of bread, gone feral". Just at that time I notice a rack of bread behind the women. The man excitedly pulls out two cut loaves, and points out the spots where they have "gone feral". The Witch is very disconcerted by this relation, but quickly covers by giving another impossible task, and the dream ends (phone rang, damn . . .)

During the dream I am consciously/subconsciously saying to myself "what the hell does feral mean??", but when looking at the bread I had the feeling that the feral spots were more earthy, natural and/or unprocessed, but not bad or rotten (it is not like you wouldn't have eaten it).

You may find it laughable that a "male" is posting in a predominently female tribe. But I thought I would share this little tidbit with you. I am very much intouch with my feminine self, (can be attested to by my wife who told me I was such, so who am I to argue?) in that I have great empathy and understanding for how women are subjugated and treated by society. My spirit guide is the Wolf, as was shown to me after spending what seemed like a lifetime in the sweat lodge. Now for your feedback and flames..where would you say this puts me in the grand scheme of existance?

Build a great fire under the light of the moon and around the sacred fire, dance, sing and pray for your men."
Grandmother Moon sent Creator's words to the women on a gentle wind and all the women heard.
And so it was that they gathered with their drums, rattles, songs and their prayers. They danced around the sacred fire under the light of the full moon and prayed for the blood shed to stop and the dying of their men to cease. They prayed, danced, and sang until the moon went to sleep and the sun awoke. Their prayers were heard and their gift was given.

thought i'd say hello after finding the tribe trawling the net looking for Clarissa Pinkola Estes resources.
I'm sitting in my office reaching into the ether for a taste of something a little more dynamic, profound, inspiring, supportive.

I'm a big fan of myth literature, Robert A Johnson and Joseph Campbell and the creative recovery work of Julia Cameron and Stephen Pressfield. I'm currently reading Women who Run with the Wolves and taking a long time as every chapter seems to dislodge my inner tectonic plates...

I'd love to connect with other people in the UK who are into all this, I'm thinking I'd like to do more self work, as well as study these principles and theories. I'm also a filmmaker and I'm currently working on a fiction piece about the evolving consciousness of two wild women.

I believe her name is Babba Yaggins. Correct? I no longer have the book so I can't look it up myself. I need your help. I dreamt of her the first time. It aided me along my healing journey. I dreamt of her again last night. I recall from the book WWRWW that she may appear again to signify something else. Honestly, I don't even remember what it meant the first time..., is it passivity? Perhaps that is all she signifies. Help me put these peices together because I find I am in a rut, a funk, again and I need help getting out.

Women in Power; Initiating Ourselves to the Predator Within

Hello women,
When I read Clarissa's book over a decade and a half ago I thought, I am the primordial wildwoman in many ways. She was already so defined in my psyche as I lived out in a cabin in the woods with my garden, my children, and nature. For twenty years I've been inspired to bring women into ritual and initiatory places to get at some things we yearn for in a magical and earth based way. I work with many, many archetypes while doing my work. The priestess archetype is in Priestess Path, a women's mystery school that I founded eight years ago. In Shadow work, the lover, magician, sovereign and warrior. But in Women in Power, this is where women who run with the wolves find a home among women's work.
Three of us founded the work six years ago because we were originally asked to develop an initiation similar to the men's New Warrior Weekends that had over 20,000 men go through. We looked at the situation and decided that it was really the predator/ prey circuitry, the victim/ perpetrator cycles that were in more need for women to understand, transform and heal. If we were going to find more of our power, my skills combined with shadow work and ritual, instinctually knew that we needed to go to the place we least thought to look.

It has to do with making a vow NOT to be like the one who hurt you in some way. Great vow to make actually. But when we made that vow in one way or another, we also lost out on a kind of power that we originally associated with that power. Kind of like throwing the baby out with the bath water. It is important work, this predator work because we finally have a container to be fierce, yet safe, inside of to practice and explore power as women in ways that we have not. Our work is to weed out healthy and unhealthy predator/prey dynamics and to learn where we might be annihilating ourselves on the inside with our criticisms, judgments and inner shaming. In other words discovering once and for all where our unhealthy predator is stalking us from within and effecting our lives on the outside.

It is hard to describe without more time but I wanted to let you know about it. We have two initiations coming up in Maryland and Massachusetts. There are six facilitators, as many as twenty staff and 27 participants. I also am organizing the first weekend in August in Massachusetts, Daughters of the EArth GAthering; a Women's Tribal Event. I've been facilitating Women Who Run With the Wolves study groups since 1998 and many of my workshops and retreats find their underpinnings in Estes' wonderful work. Most of my offerings are in the Austin/Dallas Texas area, but because of the universal appeal of WWRWW I decided to offer the study group online. For me the book was life altering and I continue to treasure it as my personal bible. No matter how many times I study it or teach it I'm always happening upon some new morsel of wisdom for myself. I'm rereading WWRWW and found this:

"Wolves never look more funny than when they have lost the scent and scrabble to find it again: they hop in the air; they run in circles; they plow up the ground with their noses; they scratch the ground, then run ahead, then back, then stand stock-still. They look as if they've lost their wits."

This is an apt description of my recent behavior. Trying to rediscover my sense of purpose and direction. Have you ever lost your way? Been knocked off your path? How did you find it again?

Hello wolf women

Greetings from Minnesota where my pack of three consists of my boyfriend, alaskan husky and myself.
We spend most of our free time in the Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area where I am pleased to relay our wild wolf population is quite healthy although there has been a serious mange problem for years. We have volunteered for the International Wolf Center the past few years and are planning on moving way north from the city and building a log home in 80 acres of forest within the next four years.
I don't know if it is because I am an only child and independent by nature or because I simply prefer animals wild or domestic over most people I know. I do know if given the choice I would definitely/literally run with the wolves.
I admire and am drawn to women who are adventurous, creative, passionate about life, brave, nurturing and loyal...so similar in character with alpha females in the wolf pack and it seems like we have a whole pack of them here at that!
Looking forward to meeting and conversing with you all soon.

My Wolfin Story

I created the word "wolfin" because it is fun to pronounce.

When I was ending a long solo cycle (bicycle) journey in the mountains, as there have been many, I saw a wolf ahead of me on the road. There was no sound. No cars. No people. I was gifted with an opportunity to relate with the beautiful wild & divine creature.

So I stopped in my tracks. I put my feet on the gravel ground. I often feel that it is easier to relate with animals, rather than people. Animals are always present. And so I stood there and had direct eye contact with this wolf. And instinctively I knew that I had to communicate with the sensitive being. I had to let the wolf know that I was peaceful, unlike some humans. So I sang. And I sang loud and clear, without words. I sang of peace.I sand of love...and it was so beautiful and profound. And the wolf wagged his tail. And in that moment we became friends...as we each continued on our own solitary paths.

That was one of the most profoundly healing experiences of this life. Animal medicine is always very clear for me. I feel incredibly blessed beyond measure.

Tell Gale Norton to Do Her Job and Protect Wolves!

Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton, who is charged with protecting our nation's natural resources, is not doing her job when it comes to wolf protection and conservation. In fact, too many of her actions have further threatened America's wolves.

Last year, a federal court overturned Secretary Norton's attempts to reduce wolf protections in the lower 48 states. But just weeks ago, Secretary Norton transferred responsibility for wolf management in central Idaho from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over to the state of Idaho - a state that, in 2001, passed a memorandum calling for the eradication of wolves in Idaho "by any means necessary."

And for the past three years, Secretary Norton has pointedly refused to implement and enforce federal law to stop Alaska's barbaric practice of using airplanes to chase down and kill wolves.

Just watched the doco on Discovery....I know it is years old but had'nt seen it and was blown away by it...so god damn beautiful....
Jim and Jamie Dutcher living with them for 6 years to help them have their first lot of pups in 50yrs in the Idaho mountains.....wow I cried heaps....so touching,esp when they had to leave them....what special friends they are....the relationships between them all and the humans....words cant really say what my heart feels...I taped it to show my friends...may peace and safety keep our wolves strong.....kia kaha.....

7th annual Women's Belly and Womb Conference

I am definitely a woman who runs with wolves. I was just doing that last week actually with a wolf mixed breed. So very gentle and intuitive. And I LOVE Clarissa Pinkola Este's writings and teachings. What an amazing woman. Anyhow, I am writing to you about us as women and the power that we may or may not have yet tapped into in our bellies and wombs.

I am ALisa and I am writing to you today from Massachusetts. For the last seven years about a 100 women a year come dressed in red to honor our belly and womb in multitudes of ways. Brothers, please let the women know if you choose. It is an awesome way for the women to viscerally honor the Goddess.
There is belly dancing (some tribal style this year), belly healing, belly painting, belly communication, belly singing, belly honoring. I am the organizer and for the last seven years I also founded Priestess Path Apprenticeship on the East Coast, Women in Power and Daughters of the Earth Gathering. This year it happens on November 5th in Massachusetts.

I am among many things your sister, a dancer, a singer, ceremonialist and women's empowerment trainer since my early twenties. Tomorrow is my 46th birthday. What matters to me right now is the state of the world and women's power in relationship to what is next on our planet, carrying out the visions that come through me, and knowing that we can enact outrageous beautiful ceremonies that liberate and reshape our future. Needless to say, I have a great life in this realm because women are amazing as you know. If you don't know, come hang out with more amazing women and they will mirror your own beauty back. Right? You don't need a conference for that however. We are everywhere!

The Women's Belly and Womb Conference was a vision from my first firewalk. After walking about eighty times over the coals and being under the full moon in the snow, I had a vision that we must gather as women and truly honor our shared stories of our bellies and wombs as well as activating our power here.

If women come the night before we have both bellydancing as well as Sheri Winston's, The Maps of the Clitoris (fascinating actually) and the opening of a live Red Tent. I've been very busy this year including recording a CD of my belly chants that I named Women Rise Up. Shawna Carol will be here too, recording artist of Goddess Chant. Must be repeated every year during Navratra. One must have a Ma Durga photo/idol in front. Burn an oil lamp to HER right ; incense to HER left. Daughters of the Earth Gathering; birthing a dream vision

Daughters of the Earth Gathering; a Women's Tribal Event

This is a birth announcement really of a woman's dreaming. I've been having this dream at night for two months now and like most of my work, I birthed a baby vision (in writing) that I wanted to share with you. This is how life works for me. I get instructions and then I follow them by enacting the dream into action. We can do this women. This is year 19 for me!

In 24 hours of birth announcement, 15 women have already come forward to teach, help and play as I still head on my trip to northern Wales. Phew. On Friday, I leave for work with women for two weeks in a row. My 17 year old daughter who is coming with me this time for Women in Power; Initiating the Predator Within looked at my to do list and said, "Whose mother would have *Order buffalo skins on it?" (They were for drummaking with 2nd year of Priestess Path on my return.) Thanks men for supporting our women's visions as we redream the world. Lunar Fertility Phase period..important!!!

I would like to share this vital information with this tribe. There is alot to learn about so I incourage all to start researching and learining more so to take real responsibility with our bodies and cycles.
It's true, you could get pregnant twice a month... And it's all because of the moon.

Most women watch their cycles and know that mid cycle or biological ovulation is the prime time to fall pregnant in.

What they don't know is that the moon can trigger ovulation and bring on fertililty at any time during the menstrual cycle (including during your period) ... it all depends on what phase the moon was at when you were born. This is your Natal Lunar Phase Fertile Time.

So what exactly is the Natal Lunar Phase Fertile Time?

The term Natal Lunar Phase Fertile Time (re-discovered by Dr Eugene Jonas) refers specifically to the angle between the sun and the moon when you were born.

Each month when the moon returns to this same position (as it was at your birth) it can trigger your body to spontaneously ovulate even if this time occurs outside your normal midcycle fertile time. Now it may not always do this, BUT THE POTENTIAL IS THERE.

If you are on the pill, it is probably a good idea to take your pill so that your are taking the active hormone pills during your lunar fertile time. This reduces the risk of pregnancy occuring through unprotected sex in the bleeding week.

The moon's trigger effect is increased by two factors - stress and sexual intercourse. That is, if you are having sex during your natal lunar phase, the chances of ovulation being triggered are increased.

Your Natal Lunar Phase Fertile time is completely individual to you because it is calculated from your birth data .

Synchronising you biological cycle to your lunar cycle can be beneficial.
For example if you are trying to avoid pregnancy it is essential to know when your natal lunar fertile time occurs so you are prepared.

If you are trying to fall pregnant, synchronising your cycle maximises your chance of falling pregnant at your fertile time.
Most women watch their cycles and know that their mid cycle or biological ovulation is the prime time to fall pregnant in.

What they don't know is that the moon can trigger ovulation and bring on fertility at any time during the menstrual cycle.

This phenomena is called the natal lunar fertile phase or lunar phase cycle.

Francesa Naish from her book The Lunar Cycle page 19 - 20 tells us "Over and over in clinical use of the lunar phase cycle instances have occurred where this cycle seemingly explains otherwise puzzling phenomena. Conceptions have always been known to occur when medical tests of fertility claim they are totally or nearly impossible. These times include during menstruation, during pregnancy or on the Pill.

Many women feel sure they know when they have conceived, only to be told by doctors that they are mistaken. Ultrasounds often give results that show the progress of the pregnancy to be 1-2 weeks at variance with the expectations of the doctor.

Many women feel sure that they know when they ovulate, have regular cycles, and yet have conceived against their wishes. These conceptions occur at times when they are quite sure they are safe.

Doctors have traditionally felt that these instances result from the woman making a mistake of one kind or another, and doubtless many of them do. However it is also possible that a further factor in fertility namely the lunar cycle, may be behind these seemingly 'erroneous' cases"

The lunar cycle or natal lunar fertile phase was rediscovered by Czech psychiatrist Dr Eugene Jonas in the 1950's. Dr Jonas was a catholic who lived close to the border of Hungary where abortion was legal. Abortion had been legalised in 1956 in Hungary due to the high failure rate of the rhythm method.

Dr Jonas observed the frequent failure of the rhythm method and the detrimental psychological effects on his patients first hand. He sought to discover why the rhythm method had such a high failure rate. His interests in astrology led him to ancient writings which stated that "women are fertile during a certain phase of the moon"... But which phase of the moon?

Through further research, study and calculation he discovered that the lunar phase at which a woman was fertile depended on the relationship between the sun and the moon at the moment she was born
Dr Jonas put forward three rules governing conception.

A woman is fertile each month at the same lunar phase under which she was born. That is, you are fertile at that time of your cycle when the moon is at the same lunar phase as when you were born - regardless of where that time falls within your menstrual cycle.
The sex of a child is determined by the position of the moon at conception.
The viability of a pregnancy and foetus is dependent upon the configuration of the nearer celestial bodies.
Dr Jonas continued to study and research these theories under a great deal of opposition and ridicule. The scientific community had difficulty (and still do) coming to grips with his theories as they were based on astrology or cosmobiology. (Cosmobiology is concerned with the demonstrable and physiological effects of certain planetary bodies rather than the interpretation of symbology of the planets.)

Dr Jonas' clinical studies were based on the premise that the natal lunar fertile time was the only time a woman would conceive - he did not take into account mid-cycle or hormonal ovulation. Astra International, a private clinic in Vienna using Dr Jonas' single fertile time premise had a success rate of 80 - 85% contraception if abstinence is practiced only during lunar fertile times.

Another doctor - Dr Rechnitz applied Dr Jonas' theories independently. Being a director of a women's clinic in Budapest, he was greatly interested in the possible patterns in the times of conception, viability of pregnancy, sex selection and a more reliable form of non invasive contraception. Combining Dr Jonas first rule with knowledge of mid cycle or hormonal ovulation and developing a two fertile time rule, Dr reichnitz used this two fertile time rule in studies, these tests produced a 98% success rate for birth control. Compare this to user success rates of other common forms of birth control - condoms 93 - 98%, Pill 93 - 99%, Diaphragm 80 - 97%.

In 1970, Astra's scientific board evaluated the results of a survey done by 1252 women using the two fertile time method - the success rate was 97.7%.

Whilst more comprehensive scientific research needs to be done to provide more statistical evidence of these findings, the existence of the lunar phase phenomena cannot be ignored. Whether it is used to avoid or achieve pregnancy it is a valuable noninvasive tool that all women can use to improve their fertility management.

dream interpretation

I have been reading Women Who Run With Wolves. The past week or so I turned my attention to another book, I'm in the midst of reading a few. Well 2 nights ago i had a dream that while on our way to my parents house we notices 2 dogs in the yard of a H.S. friend. What I remeber next is that The dogs were actually little wolves and they were nipping at my boyfriends legs. I was franticly trying to divert them away from him.

I am reading alot about personal mythology, that talks some about the importance of dreams and their messages.
Any thoughts on what this dream may be telling me that i am not getting? I thought to maybe offer what I am thinking in relationship to the goings on in our lives...but maybe it is best not to?

Crystal Woman, a singer/songwriter of Native American heritage, made a CD in the 1990s with her song "I Am She Who Runs with the Wolves". I like the whole CD, but this song is my favorite track. It's really beautiful. Not sold in major record stores, only in small new age shops.

Wolves have been my totem and strength animal all my life.

Three years ago I applied to the silver elves for an elvish name and it came back as "volalupi" which they translated as "she who runs with the wolves".

I also have the book mentioned in the title, although I shamefully admit i haven't finished reading it yet.
